It’s a party on the streets of Green Bridge! Bishop Wildrick makes his move to poison the city government and seize control with a mob of the faithful. An assassin stalks Mrs. Bridge’s household, Merrily gets sweaty, Beatrice gives Veridia some questionable fashion advice, and Cyrus has the time of his life on a rooftop.
Professor Stoat terrorizes his class with logic; Danny Frogflower is eaten by not-cannibals. Merrily discovers the value of straightening shoes, and also that her boss is up to no good. Merrily gets up to no good herself, and talks her way into a fancy party. Robert Franco turns out to be rather different than we imagined.
Jonathan meets a romantic rival, and sets about making all kinds of mistakes. He goes on a little ski trip, and finds that the situation in Hog Hurst has changed dramatically since he was last at home. Mr. Southfarm is downright un-neighborly, which is to be expected considering the new neighbors.
Reporters report, enthusiastically. New explorers arrive at Finery Valley, and new deals are hastily made. Merrily makes a decision, and Cyrus delivers two lectures. Jonathan finds an ugly place inside himself, and earns a broken wrist for his trouble.
Cyrus bids a fond farewell to Sheria. Johnathan and Merrily go to meet some demons, but find an entirely different mystery. Daven and Devi make a bad deal to get their new friends out of trouble, and both of them suffer the consequences.
Professor Stoat and his band pick up a new follower. Merrily marries a horse, hypothetically. Johnathan thinks about how he thinks about strangling Cyrus. We meet Cyrus’s sponsor, and Alice Miller hears those four magic words.
Johnathan and Alice set off in pursuit of Cyrus and Merrily. Johnathan’s head injury turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Alice gets in touch with her inner berserker. Cyrus sees a glimmer in the darkness. Simon engages in delicate negotiations.

Simon goes mad for a bit, but he gets better. The Gizzard leads Cyrus and Merrily over the Green River in search of the missing post-rider, but they soon find a more compelling guide. They make depressing contingency plans, and Merrily makes a choice. Cyrus temporarily loses his dignity.
